I just wonder, which member of the party are they roasting? :-) Speaking of pigs, who is going to see this new movie about Dubya? I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm sure it will be a total hatchet job, which you'd think would be enjoyable to watch. But on the other hand, I feel it's almost unfair. I mean, the guy is such an easy target, to skewer him is like shooting fish in a barrel. So, I'm not sure. I may wait until it comes out on DVD.

Until then, come hungery to the Republican party pig roast!

Well, Robert Love Taylor is probably rotisserie-ing in his grave going "Who are they calling a pig?! Better not be me!"

:D

Wow...two interesting factoids about this guy. He was actually a Democrat, but ran (successfully) for governor against his brother, who was a Republican. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Love_Taylor
How interesting!

Also, it says in that article that his remains were disinterred from the Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville (which I always wanted to go to, as it's very historical), and moved to Monte Vista Cemetery in Johnson City. I actually worked at Monte Vista for a while. Yes, I worked in a cemetery, and I drove around the massive grounds in a golf cart to show people to their loved ones' gravesites. :-)

I don't think I even noticed that was his sign. This picture was taken at Sycamore Shoals, which is quite a significant historic site in itself. Thanks for (accidentally) prompting me to do all this research, Meri!

You're so welcome!! Mind you, I have NEVER lived in Tennessee but somewhere along my reading on American history I remember the "war of the roses" in Tennessee, the two brothers who ran on opposite tickets for Governor. I always got a chuckle out of that and it was a good story from late reconstruction, when 'Southern Democrat' was pretty much a dirty word.

When I saw the Republican Party pig-roast sign in front of his hysterical marker, I nearly spit water on my screen. It just struck my funny bone hard. His brother is probably laughing too :)

Yeah, I'd imagine so! I'd always heard of the War of the Roses, and I'm sure that in 7th grade TN History, we probably studied it, but it got lost in the shuffle when learning about everything else.

"Southern Democrat" is still a dirty word. ;-) You should see some of the looks I get when I confess I'm not a Republican. Most of my family members think I was hatched from a spaceship.

I actually live about 20 minutes from the site where all this took place. You know, a lot of history went down here, and I feel kind of inspired to research more of it. Some of my family members were the first known settlers in the area, and I've been to their farm, but now I'm intrigued to find out more about what happened here back in the day.

Hmmmmmmmmm....
