I just heard that Tim Russert has died of a heart attack. I figured if any of the MSNBC guys would have a heart attack, it would be Chris "let's play Hardball" Matthews.
He was only 58. I remember when 58 seemed ancient, but now it's only 18 years older than me. That just seems so astounding.

I've watched his animated election returns for years. He would get so excited with his white board, explaining the processes of votes. This will be a strange election without him. Well, not that it won't be strange anyway but still..wow.

I just posted this on my lj.

I'm shocked.

I loved him. He always had something intelligent to contribute. I'm gonna miss him and I'm gonna hate watching election results without him.

Right around the time that I posted this entry, at least five other people on my friends list posted the same thing within about a ten-minute span. It was truly shocking!

He has always been fun to watch during election coverage. It definitely won't be the same this year.

Max...

I've never seen anyone get so excited about elections, that's for sure! I remember just recently, when the Clinton/Obama campaigns were in full gear, he was explaining on the Today Show, how we could potentially have a tie for the Democratic nom. He looked like he was about to pop, even over that.

Apparently he was a big advocate of family time, so while I can't comment on his diet or exercise habits, he did apparently make an effort to spend time with his loved ones, and encouraged his fellow journalists to do the same. He did seem very close to his family (remember the book he wrote about his dad?) He was keynote speaker at his son's recent college graduation, and had a long marriage, so hopefully he did get a lot of quality time with the people who were important to him.

You know how when someone dies, people always set up a "makeshift memorial" near their workplace or somewhere?

This is absolutely true: the first item left outside NBC's Washington bureau was "RIP Tim Russert, We'll Miss You" ... written on a white board.

I saw that on MSNBC today and thought it was such a cool and fitting memorial.

I'll miss him. He was really, really good. Sad.

Yeah, I'll miss him, too. I'm curious as to who will take over his post during election returns? Looks like David Gregory is being groomed for the position on MSNBC, but it will won't be the same..

I did, too. He actually made election returns understandable. (Yes, I know you tried, but you didn't have a whiteboard. :-P) I wonder what respects will be paid to him during this year's election?

As I commented to someone else, I loved the fact that he didn't have that "I'm the media and I AM GOD" air about him. He asked tough questions, and I loved to watch him.

Yeah, he came off as a very average guy, which is what, I think, made him so likeable.
