Read the books. The movies are worth seeing -- but I've gotta agree with one reviewer I read who said the first couple movies aren't films so much as staged readings. Diehard HP fans quibble that the movies aren't faithful enough to the books and leave a lot out. I don't insist on complete faithfulness in my adaptations. Movies and books are different media.
