I was just thinking the other day that I've not had a "true" migraine (as in, full-blown) in probably a couple of months. In migraine years, that's like a lifetime, because I normally get at least a 2-3 per month, sometimes more. Well, I shouldn't have been thinking, because I now have been stricken. Or is that struck? Strucken?

It started yesterday afternoon, as a seemingly normal headache, but I soon felt it moving to the left side, which is my usual side for a migraine. I sedated myself and went to bed fairly early last night in hopes that it might go away. No such luck. This morning, it was back with a vengeance and had moved to the right side, which is never A Good Thing. If you are a migraine sufferer, you probably tend to get them on the same side of your head each time, but on the rare occasion that they strike the other side, you usually know you're in for a whopper, and not of the Burger King variety. I have felt like absolute death today. Seriously, death.

I'm out of Imitrex and have no hopes of scoring any at the moment. So I've been making up cocktails of Acetominophen and aspirin, which has done nothing but make me nauseous. I finally decided I needed a Coke, so I set out for the store to get one. I don't keep soda at my house, well..ever. Because if I did, I'd drink them. I so rarely have caffeine that when I DO have a migraine, I can use it to my benefit to treat it. I had some Excedrin Migraine in the car, which is basically the aforementioned cocktail of Acetominophen and aspirin, spiked with a dose of caffeine. I had two left, so I got the bright idea to take them in my car as I was drinking the Coke. I dropped one into the black hole under the seat of my car and never found it. Yay me.

So, now the pain seems to have dulled a bit, but my eye is all twitchy and I look like I'm up to something. As I was driving from the store, I could've sworn I saw a huge flock of birds go flying by, but upon closer inspection, I realized it was merely sky. Then I almost ran into a car going through the parking lot, but thankfully I narrowly avoided any bodily harm. I keep seeing things go flying in front of my eye which I think is a gnat, so I swat at it, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing really there. Once I start talking to myself, I will totally have the Crazy Homeless Lady act down. Oh wait, I already do that.

Man, it's been a day. A day that I'd really like to end.

My sister and I have come up with a 'cocktail' that works for us during full blown migraines:

Excedrin Migraine, Benedryl, and Pepto-Bismal. Then sleep. Since our migraines are mostly allergy/sinus driven that takes care of the pain, the histamines, and the upset stomach that such sharp pain creates.

If I'm out of Imitrix this is what I fall back on and man it seems to work.

I surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre hope you feel better soon!!!!!!

Thank you, Meri. Unfortunately mine are hormone-related, so I don't know if the Benedryl would do me any good, but man was I nauseous last night. I've never quite understood the place of nausea in a migraine anyway. So it's just because the pain is so intense that our stomach says "I can't take this anymore?" I often seem to feel better after I've thrown up, but getting to that point...bleh. And the blinding pain that I experience during the...ummm, "process" is seriously enough to make me want to scream.

It does seem to be dulling a bit, but I'd much prefer it just went AWAY.

You poor thing!

I have always assumed the extreme pain and nausea link has to do with the location of the pain (head/neck) area and its proximity to the middle ear. The pain is so intense my entire head rings like a bell and I get dizzy and disoriented, so I feel unbalanced. A combo pain/motion sickness. UG!

I wonder if Melatonin would help in place of the benadryl? They often recommend that in place of estrogen or 'premarin' for things like hot flashes and hormonal surges during peri/pre menopause...
hmmm...

Just..FEEL BETTER, soon! *HUGS*

OMG, I have been sooooooooo dizzy today! I was in the shower this morning and actually had to hold onto the wall to keep from passing out. Afterwards, I had to just sit for a few minutes to get my bearings. When I walked down to the laundry room to get clothes from the dryer, I was out of breath and shaking by the time I made it back up to my bedroom. Ridiculous! Grrrrr.

I'll ask my doctor about Melatonin. He actually did put me on a dosage of Premarin a few years ago to help the drop in estrogen levels, but it actually gave me the worst migraine of my life. I wound up in the ER getting an injection of Imitrex. Man, it sucks being a girl sometimes. I'm actually going to the doctor later this week, so I'll ask about possible estrogen substitutes. Thanks for the tip!

I hope you feel better soon!!

I feel your pain. About 3 weeks ago I got a migraine the 2nd night we were visiting Herbie's parents. This time it was totally unexpected because it wasn't a hormonal thing. It hit in the middle of the night and I thought someone was fucking stabbing me in the eye. I rolled over and tried to ignore it... I slept it off some. I woke up feeling woozy and couldn't see anything really. I managed to get downstairs and of course I had no imitrex on me and nobody in his family gets migraines. I had to take 4 advil and sleep about 4 hours downstairs in the dark basement. When I say I have bad migraines, none of them have ever compared to that one. I felt drained and shaky from it that whole day and through the next day. :(

I'm hoping and PRAYING that when I get this IUD on Thursday it will take away the migraines for forever.

I am not prescribing this for you... but, when I was having problems with a salivary stone, I had a doctor tell me that I can take up to 3 advil and 3 tylenol at a time... but not on a long term basis... to alleviate pain.... add that to the caffeine and *shrug*

Hope you get to feeling better.

Two words: SHOCK IT

Get an ice pack and a (hot as you can stand it) heat pack

Put one on each side of your neck at the same time. Your nervous system doesn't know which one to respond to so it does sort of a hard reboot like a pc.

Nice tip I got from my chiropractor and it works for me alot.

I hope your poor head feels better.

I sometimes see those shadowy things sometimes too...but they are almost never related to a headache. They're freaky...and not in a good way.
