Last night I stopped on my way in to get gas. I went in to pay, and noticed the...person behind the counter seemed rather gender-neutral. He/she was not "androgynous" in an Annie Lennox/David Bowie sense. He/she actually reminded me more of Otto the bus driver on the Simpsons. Long, scruffy hair, an oversized Baja shirt (circa 1992) and absolutely no facial features that would identify him/her as male or female.

So I waited in line behind two other people, but I still could not tell what sex this kid was. When I finally got up to pay, I said "I'd like $15 on pump two, please." It was then that I realized the kid was a boy (or a really, really deep-voiced girl. With an Adam's apple), when he said, rather excitedly "rockin'!"

"Rockin'?"

I was so tempted to follow that up by saying "with Dokken?" but I refrained (a) because I didn't want anyone to know that I knew who Dokken was and (b) I figured he'd be too young to get the reference. He couldn't have been more than 17.

Walking back to the car, I was half amused and half bumfuzzled. "Rockin'?" Whatever happened to "thank you?" Maybe I'm just boring.

The next time anyone calls up and says they'd like to apply for a mortgage, I think I'm gonna say "rockin'!"

Too bad this didn't happen a little while ago. I would have caught the reference. ;-)

This was at the Pilot, not far from your house (on Cedar Bluff.) You must check this kid out.

I'm not joking. He's a dead ringer.

Oh do I love people watching. Gas stations are really one of the best places to find some people amusement...of course the state fair being the all time best. Of course an 80s cover band rock concert might be a close second. Just depends on the music, I am sure.

Speaking of '80s cover bands, have you ever seen the Breakfast Club play? They do lots of shows around the southeast, but I know they travel around a good bit, too. If you've not ever seen them, you must go. I've seen them...uhh..5, 6 times, I guess. Awesome show.

But yes, I love people watching. I can find a good show just about anywhere. :-)

you really totally should. it'd be worth it for the 4 1/2 seconds of dead air before your client said, I beg your pardon?

If I didn't think I'd get fired, I'd do it. ;-)

Although if the client was laid-back enough, it might score me brownie points.

You'd should've said, "It's all great in '08!" And, hey, what's wrong with Dokken?!

OK. Can you see me listening to Dokken? I mean, seriously.

(They're not the ones who did "Smooth Opinion", right? :-P)

Oh, Marky Mark. Bless your poor little Russian heart. ;-) You missed soooo much by not growing up here.

Oh...but the "Rockin' with Dokken" thing is funny. Apparently that was like a big saying, and there was even a stand-up comedy routine about it.

Y'know, even though I was never attracted to the big-haired boys, it kinda pains me to know that I used to wear my hair sort of like that. The blonde guy on the far right? Put my face on his, and you've got it. I used enough hairspray to single-handedly knock out the ozone layer. *sigh*

But because of the Iron Curtain, you missed all kinds of awesomeness. Like..Dokken! :-P

OK, for the record, I NEVER said "gag me with a spoon" (unless I was singing along with Moon Unit and Frank in "Valley Girl.) And the only time I said "way cool" was with an eye-roll, in relation to your former roommate. So...n'yah. :-P

Didn't you tell me something about Dokken one time? I think it was in relation to hair. Or perhaps it was another one of those hairbands. :-P I can't tell one from the other!

Dokken didn't ever do that much for me. My favorites were Cinderella, Poison and Motley Crue. Cinderella totally topped the list! I saw them a number of years ago, and they were just as much fun as I'd remembered.

I could not tell you one song that Cinderella did. :-P I do remember them being around, but I wasn't that aware.

There IS a funny misunderstood song lyric from one of those hair metal bands. Remember Bullet Boys? "Smooth Up In Ya?" I thought for yeeeeaaars they were saying "smooth opinion." I was in a store with my friend Terri just a few years ago, and she said something about "how controversial" that song was. I said "why?" And she just looked at me like "duh!" That was when I realized what it really was saying, and it was a very "ohhhhhhhh..OH!" moment. :-)

Ugh. The Bulletboys suck. I mean they REALLY suck. Worst live performers I've ever seen...period.

Hee...and they opened for Cinderella! :-) 3 bands on the ticket that night...those 2, and Winger, who was quite good if I remember right.

One time I went in ANOTHER convenience store to get a drink and some gas. The clerk kept calling me "sir", but then I found out later, he was just messing with me. I thought maybe I was having a REALLY bad hair day.

Do you remember Dokken? I'd say they were on the way out (late '80s) by the time you'd have started listening to a lot of music, right? Even if the kid behind the counter didn't get it, I'm sure the guy in line behind me would've chuckled. :-P

If you had said that...
